Choose an argument: Option 1 or 2
- Investigate a theme that has emerged from our introduction to language politics
- Respond to one of the claims made in our texts or research your own question to share a new perspective not covered in the readings
- Consider language and literacy’s relationship with identity, culture, and/or background
- Investigate any argument of your liking. It is very important that you choose an argument that genuinely interests you or that you are motivated to learn more about
- Whatever it is, the topic must be controversial or debatable, allowing you to explore multiple perspectives and determine your own stance
Your Paper Must:
- Be at least 1500 words and no more than 2000 words
- Quote, paraphrase, summarize and synthesize 4-7 sources, comprised of:
- 1-2 scholarly (peer-reviewed articles, .edu sites, scholarly book chapters, etc.)
- 2-3 non-scholarly (course texts, blog posts, personal essays, literature, etc.)
- 1-2 multimedia (videos, images, photos, memes, soundbites, links, Tweets, etc.)
- Be composed of an equal balance of your source work and your own interpre-tations, ideas, signposting, transitions, connection making, and claims
- Take a direct stance
- Utilize MLA citations within the body of your essay
- Include a Works Cited page
Grading Checklist
- First draft turned in on time
- Final draft turned in on time
- Meets 1500 minimum word count requirement
- Utilizes proper formatting (including heading, title, page numbers)
- Attempts to quote, paraphrase, summarize and synthesize at least 4 different sources
- Includes at least one scholarly source
- Includes at least two non-scholarly sources
- Includes at least one multimedia source
- Takes a clear stance
- At least half the paper is original interpretations, ideas, signposting, transitions and claims
- Utilizes MLA citations within the body of the essay
- Includes a Works Cited Page
- Revisions have clearly been made from second draft
